Resistance Bands and Weight Loss
How Resistance Bands Can Help You Lose Weight and Relieve Back Pain
One of the most common side effects of being overweight is lower back pain. This is because this excess weight puts extra stress on your lower back and can lead to injury. This is what happened to my father, who has had the "pot belly" his whole life, suffered a back injury and needed spinal fusion in the late 1980's. It is entirely possible that this situation could have been avoided had he been in shape and not overweight.
But the challenge becomes how to lose weight? With the pressures of a career, family, and maybe taking care of aging parents, our time is not our own and there is very little free time left over for exercise.
And so many of us go about trying to lose weight the wrong way ... by just focusing on cardio exercises [walking on the treadmill, 30 minutes on the elliptical, etc ...]and not thinking about increasing our strength. But permanent weight loss is only possible when you start burning more calories BETWEEN your workouts. And the best weight loss tip I could give you is to start strength training and adding muscle to your frame. In this way, you will ramp up your metabolism, start burning those extra calories and permanently lose the weight by making your body a more effective fat burning machine.
But how do you go about doing this? The problem as I said earlier is one of time. Do you have the time to drive to the gym, get this workout in [and potentially put up with a packed gym and having to sit around waiting to use the equipment] and fulfill all of your other obligations?
So is there a technique that you can employ from your house, your office, even your hotel room when traveling on vacation, where you can get a great workout in and start the process of adding muscle and losing weight at the same time?
There is. Resistance band exercises. Resistance bands are hollow tubes that simulate the resistance you would feel from a dumbbell or free weight at the gym.
And they are incredibly versatile. With one small accessory, a door hinge to attach the resistance band to the door, you are capable of performing just about every strength training exercise at the gym from the comfort of your living room or even at the office on your lunch hour.
There are other advantages to resistance band training from the home or office.
- You save money on the monthly gym fee.
- You save the time of traveling to and from the gym. Depending on how far you would travel you may be able to get your entire workout in during what would have been travel time.
- You don't have to wait to use the equipment.
- You can work out at any time your schedule permits.
- The bands are portable. You can bring them anywhere with you.
- There is a safety element to using the bands. No one ever crushed their foot by dropping a rubber tube on it. You can't say that about dumbbells.
- And as far as the affordability of bands, even a top-notch set will run you at most $100. No other piece of home gym equipment is that affordable and yet that versatile.
So by starting a home-based strength training routine based around resistance band exercises, you can permanently lose weight, add muscle, increase your metabolism and take the pressure off of your lower back.
